Liam Roets: From South Africa to Orchard Finance and a passion for Debt Advisory
Liam Roets is 26 years old and moved from South Africa to the Netherlands in June. After studying Investment Management and completing an honors degree in Financial Analysis at Stellenbosch University, he worked at Absa Bank as an analyst in the restructuring team within the Investment Banking division. “I mostly focused on commercial property finance and mid-corporates,” he explains.
The move to the Netherlands came through his wife’s career at PwC. “When she got a job here, we decided to relocate. First, I had to sort out my residence permit, and then I started looking for work.” That search led him to Orchard Finance, where he was invited for an interview by Nicolai. “I immediately found Orchard Finance very interesting. It felt like a warm and professional environment, and luckily, I progressed further and got the offer. I’m really happy to be here, it’s been great meeting everyone.”
From a large bank to boutique consultancy
Transitioning from a large bank to a boutique advisory felt like a natural next step. “What attracted me was the dynamic, entrepreneurial spirit at Orchard Finance. At a big bank, you often work in a very structured way. Here, you have space to think actively and contribute. That really suits the way I like to work.”
Liam’s focus is on debt advisory, with occasional corporate finance assignments. “Gustian is my manager, and I’m looking forward to learning a lot and making an impact throughout the year.”
Adding a personal touch
Liam also brings his own energy and humor to the team. “I’d say my colleagues would describe me as humorous. I like to joke around and keep the atmosphere light, but I also know when it’s time to be serious. And yes, apparently I make the best tea!” He laughs, explaining that in South Africa, tea is always served with milk. “I grew up drinking it that way, so I’m trying to bring that habit here too.”
Outside of work, Liam has a wide range of interests. “I’ve been skiing since 2007 and try to go every year, mostly in the Alps in Austria and Italy. We’ve also skied in Switzerland, France, and even Canada. I also enjoy going to the gym, walking when the weather is nice, and solving puzzles like Rubik’s cubes, chess, and Geoguessr. That’s an online game where you’re placed somewhere in the world and have to guess your location based on your surroundings.”
Looking ahead
Liam is excited about the months ahead at Orchard Finance. “I hope to hit the ground running and learn as much as possible. It’s hard to believe there are only two months left in the year! I’ve also scheduled a few introductory meetings with colleagues so I can get to know everyone.”
For Liam, joining Orchard Finance is about more than just gaining work experience. “It’s the combination of a professional environment, an open culture, and the chance to make a real impact on projects. Orchard Finance feels like a place where I can grow and enjoy what I do.”
